How Joint Strength Is Calculated
Round thread joint strength is the lesser of two failure modes: the pin fracturing under the last engaged thread, or the threads jumping out (pulling apart). API 5C3 publishes both on the pipe ultimate strength Up (not yield). The calculator derives the area under the last perfect thread, then evaluates both formulas.

Worked Example — 9⅝″ 47 lb/ft L80, LTC
- OD = 9.625″, wall = 0.472″, so d = 8.681″; L80 Up = 95,000 psi, Yp = 80,000 psi.
- Ajp = 0.7854·[(9.625−0.1425)² − 8.681²] = 11.43 in²; L = L4 − M = 4.75 − 0.5 = 4.25″.
- Fracture ≈ 1,031,900 lbf; jump-out ≈ 905,500 lbf → rated joint strength ≈ 905,000 lbf (jump-out governs).

Why is joint strength based on ultimate, not yield?
API publishes round thread joint strengths on the pipe ultimate strength Up, because the fracture and jump-out failure modes occur near the ultimate, not at first yield. That is why the fracture formula uses Up and the calculator asks for the grade (which fixes both Yp and Up from API 5CT).
Why does a lighter wall lower joint strength?
Thinner wall means a larger ID, which reduces the area under the last perfect thread (Ajp) — and both fracture and jump-out scale with Ajp. At the same OD and grade, a lighter weight develops less joint strength, which is why weight matters as much as grade in the connection check.
Does this replace the manufacturer's rating?
No. This is the API 5C3 formula value for a standard API connection. Always confirm against the API 5CT published joint-strength tables and, for premium connections, the manufacturer's qualified rating per API 5C5 / ISO 13679.
