API 5L — Complete Line Pipe Specification Tables

Full API 5L / ISO 3183 specification data: seamless, ERW, LSAW and SSAW line pipe dimensions (OD, wall, weight), grade properties for all PSL1 and PSL2 grades B through X120, chemistry composition and tensile requirements. Data per API 5L 46th edition.

API 5L Line Pipe Specifications

API 5L / ISO 3183 governs line pipe for oil, gas, and water transmission pipelines. PSL1 covers grades L175/A25 through L485/X70. PSL2 extends to L830/X120 with carbon equivalent limits and mandatory Charpy impact testing.

Use these tables to find OD, wall thickness, weight per metre, and grade mechanical and chemistry properties for seamless, ERW, LSAW, and SSAW pipe.

Looking for the full pipe schedule chart? API 5L does not tabulate sizes; the size tabs on this page show common ASME B36.10M sizes that fall inside API 5L Table 9. For the complete ASME B36.10M reference table covering all standard pipe schedules across all NPS sizes, see ASME B36.10M Pipe Schedule Chart →

Sizes and weights: ASME B36.10M. API 5L lists no sizes of its own — Table 9 sets the permissible OD × wall range, and its NOTE refers to ISO 4200 and ASME B36.10M for standardized values. Every row here is inside Table 9. Seamless pipe OD range ½″–24″; one or two representative walls per OD — other walls inside Table 9 can be ordered. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum wall thickness for API 5L X65 pipe?

API 5L does not specify a minimum wall thickness for X65: the purchaser states the outside diameter and wall thickness on the order (7.1 f)), within the permissible range of Table 9. The wall tolerance then comes from Table 11, which depends on the process and the wall, not on the grade or the PSL. For seamless pipe over 4.0 mm and under 25.0 mm it is +0.150t / −0.125t; for welded pipe over 5.0 mm and under 15.0 mm it is ± 0.1t. For a 12.7 mm specified wall, the minimum acceptable wall is 11.11 mm seamless and 11.43 mm welded. Thinner and thicker walls take the absolute values in Table 11 (for seamless walls of 25.0 mm and over, the greater of an absolute value and 0.1t).

What is the difference between API 5L PSL1 and PSL2?

PSL1 is the baseline product specification level. PSL2 adds a maximum yield strength, yield-to-tensile ratio limits, carbon equivalent limits and mandatory Charpy impact testing of the pipe body (Table 18, item 9). The diameter and wall thickness tolerances (Tables 10 and 11) are the same for both PSLs; the dimensional difference is the ends: PSL2 pipe is furnished plain-end only (9.12.1.2), while threaded, belled and special-coupling ends are PSL1 only. Pipe ordered for sour service (Annex H) or offshore service (Annex J) is PSL2 by definition.

What does the suffix letter mean in API 5L grade designations?

The suffix letter in PSL2 API 5L grades indicates the delivery condition (heat treatment): N = normalised or normalised rolled, Q = quenched and tempered, M = thermomechanical rolled, R = as-rolled (limited to certain grades).

What is the minimum yield strength of API 5L Grade X65?

For API 5L Grade X65 (L450), the specified minimum yield strength is 450 MPa (65,300 psi) for both PSL1 and PSL2. PSL2 adds a maximum yield strength of 600 MPa (87,000 psi), a tensile strength of 535 MPa (77,600 psi) minimum to 760 MPa (110,200 psi) maximum, and a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio of 0.93 (API 5L Table 7). These upper limits give predictable behaviour under operating loads and during field bending.

What end finish options are available for API 5L line pipe?

API 5L 9.12 covers plain ends, threaded ends, belled ends and ends prepared for special couplings. Threaded, belled and special-coupling ends are PSL1 only, and threads follow API 5B; PSL2 pipe is always plain-end. Unless otherwise agreed, plain ends are square cut up to 3.2 mm wall and bevelled for welding above that, with a 30° bevel (+5°/−0°) (9.12.5); other bevel preparations can be agreed. Bevelled plain-end pipe is what most onshore and offshore transmission pipelines specify for girth welding.
