Whether a steel pipe order ships in a standard container, on a flat-rack, or as breakbulk is decided mostly by one thing: the length of the joints against the length of the box. Get it wrong and the cost surfaces late — a flat-rack surcharge, a breakbulk booking arranged in a hurry, or wasted space in a 40ft container that weighed out half-full. The mode is settled on most orders, and the recurring surprise is at the long end of the range, where pipe that the buyer expected to containerise turns out to need a flat-rack.
What we see on orders: A buyer specifies full-length Range 3 casing to minimise the number of connections in the string, then assumes it will ship in 40ft containers like the rest of the order. Range 3 runs up to 14.63 m, and a 40ft box has only about 12 m of usable length — so the long joints will not fit, and the shipment moves to a flat-rack or breakbulk with different handling and cost. We flag the length-versus-container question when the range is chosen, because the joint length that is right for the well is not always the joint length that boxes cleanly.
The Fit Rule — Joint Length vs Container Length
The container sets a hard limit. Per ISO 668, a 40ft ISO container is 12,192 mm long externally and about 12.0 m usable internally; a 20ft container is 6,058 mm external and roughly 5.9 m internal. A pipe joint longer than that internal length does not go into a standard box — there is no loading trick around it.
Set the API 5CT casing ranges against that limit:

Range 1 and Range 2 containerise without difficulty — even the top of Range 2, at 10.36 m, sits inside the 12 m box. Range 3 is where it breaks: the band starts at 10.36 m and runs to 14.63 m, so a shorter R3 joint may fit a 40ft container while a full-length one will not. The range designation alone does not answer the question — the actual joint length does. Note also that threaded-and-coupled tubing uses different, narrower ranges (R1 20–24 ft, R2 28–32 ft, R3 38–42 ft), so do not carry the casing numbers across to a tubing shipment.
Container, Flat-Rack, or Breakbulk
Once the joint length is known, the mode follows the pattern in the table, with the detail on each below:

Read the table down the "risk" column, because that is the one that flows into the Incoterm: each step from container to flat-rack to breakbulk adds handling, and handling is where transit damage happens. The length and diameter of the pipe pick the row; the risk column then tells you how hard the shipment has to be inspected and insured.
- Standard container (20ft or 40ft): the default for Range 1, Range 2, and shorter Range 3 pipe. Sealed, stackable, lowest handling risk, and the cheapest per-tonne on most liner routes. This is where the bulk of OCTG and small-to-medium line pipe travels.
- Flat-rack: a container base with no fixed sides or roof, for pipe too long or too awkward for a closed box. A 40ft flat-rack offers about 11.66 m of internal length and, more importantly, open sides for crane and side loading, which suits long bundled pipe. It is the usual home for full-length Range 3 and for large-diameter joints that will not nest in a box.
- Breakbulk: loose or bundled pipe loaded directly into a vessel's hold, for the longest joints and the largest projects. It carries the most handling — multiple lifts, open exposure, and manual lashing — and therefore the most transit-damage exposure, but it takes pipe that no container or flat-rack can.
The progression tracks joint length and diameter: short and small stays in a box, long or large moves to flat-rack, and the longest or the highest-volume project goes breakbulk.
Flat-rack and breakbulk are not just "bigger container" — they change the damage exposure. A sealed container protects pipe from weather and from most handling once the doors are shut; a flat-rack or breakbulk shipment is lifted by crane, exposed on deck or in the hold, and lashed by hand. That is where transit rust, lost thread protectors, and shifted bundles come from, and under CFR or CIF that damage is the buyer's from the load port. If a shipment has to move breakbulk, that is exactly the order to inspect at loading and insure properly — the mode and the risk decision belong together.
Payload — Why Heavy Pipe Weighs Out
Steel pipe is dense, so a container usually reaches its maximum payload before it fills the volume — it "weighs out" rather than "cubes out." A 40ft container loaded with heavy casing can hit its weight limit with the box only partly full, which means the extra length is wasted freight. For dense, heavy pipe a 20ft container is frequently the more economical unit: you reach the payload limit in the smaller box, and you are not paying to move air in a 40ft.
The practical step is to estimate the bundle weight against the container's payload before choosing the box size. As a real example, we recently shipped 580 pieces of 9⅝" 53.5 lb/ft P110 casing to an African operator in 20 standard 40 ft containers. The operator chose containerised shipping over conventional pipe-rack ocean freight specifically so the receiving side could use standard port-handling equipment and cut demurrage exposure on a landlocked inland delivery — and the joint count per box was set by the payload weight, not by how many joints would physically fit.
What This Means for the Purchase Order and Incoterm
Shipping mode is not only a logistics detail — it interacts with the length range you specify and the Incoterm you agree.
- Treat length range as a shipping lever, not only a string-design choice. If containerised shipping matters on your route, Range 2 keeps the pipe in a standard box; full-length Range 3 commits you to flat-rack or breakbulk. Weigh the fewer-connections benefit of R3 against the handling cost.

- Confirm the mode before the vessel is booked, because switching from container to flat-rack or breakbulk late means re-quoting freight and, sometimes, re-planning the conformity and documentation timeline.
When NOT to Assume
- Do not assume Range 3 containerises — full-length R3 casing (up to 14.63 m) exceeds a 40ft box and even a 40ft flat-rack at the top of the range; it may go breakbulk.
- Do not default to a 40ft container for heavy pipe — dense casing weighs out; a 20ft is often cheaper per tonne.
- Do not carry casing length ranges over to tubing — the tubing ranges are different (R3 tubing 38–42 ft).
- Do not treat breakbulk like a sealed container for risk — the extra handling is real exposure; inspect at loading and insure it.
